Because of the increasing popularity of outdoor fire pits we find the market flooded with all shapes, sizes and styles of new fire pits. Are all fire pits created equal? What factors should we take into account when selecting a fire pit for our home or work location? And what safety considerations should we think about?
Fire Pit Selection
Do I want my outdoor fire pit to be an attraction or centre piece in my backyard?
Then consider if the design of the outdoor fire pit is aesthetically appealing from all sides. Will it look the part on my patio or in my backyard?
Will I want to take the outdoor fire pit with me on family outings?
Then it may be good to consider a model that can fold or break down, a fire pit that is not too heavy or one that is easily carried.
If I plan on using my outdoor fire pit also for cooking, does it come with the necessary equipment, or do I have to purchase those items as extras?
Are sparks from the outdoor fire pit going to be a concern?
Make sure you find out what the laws are from your local fire marshal. Do I need a fire pit spark screen? If I decide on purchasing a fire bowl, can I obtain a spark screen for it?
Do not forget:
Patio fire pits, fire bowls, chimineas and outdoor fireplaces should never be used indoors under any circumstances. Outdoor fire pits are for outdoor use only!
Safety Considerations
Take a good look at the area where you will use your outdoor fire pit.
Will sparks create a hazard for dry grass, brush, or low branches of trees?
What about our neighbours, what direction is the smoke going to go?
Is my outdoor fire pit on safe level ground?
If using on a patio or deck, have I considered the heat generated through my fire pit? The use of a fire pit pad, stone slab or bricks will stop ashes or generated heat from your fire pit burning or marking your deck.
Keeping a fire extinguisher close by is always a good idea.
Never take safety for granted:
"Shrewd is the one that has seen the calamity and proceeds to conceal himself, but the inexperienced have passed along and must suffer the penalty." Proverbs 22:3.
If you take the above factors into account when selecting your outdoor fire pit, your next gathering with family and friends will not only be very enjoyable, but safe.
